LOLER EXPLAINED

What Is a LOLER Thorough Examination?

A LOLER thorough examination is a detailed assessment of lifting equipment and its safety critical parts by a competent person. Its purpose is to identify defects, deterioration or weaknesses that could affect the safe continued use of the equipment.

It is different from routine maintenance or servicing. The examination provides an independent assessment of the equipment's condition and must be followed by a written report recording the examination and any relevant findings.

LOLER applies to lifting equipment used at work and can cover a wide range of machinery and accessories depending on how the equipment is used.

INSPECTION FREQUENCY

How Often Is a LOLER Inspection Required?

The required interval depends on the equipment, how it is used and whether a written examination scheme is in place.

As a general guide, lifting equipment used to lift people is normally thoroughly examined at least every 6 months. Lifting accessories are also generally examined every 6 months, while other lifting equipment is commonly examined every 12 months.

A written scheme of examination may specify different intervals where appropriate. Our qualified surveyors can advise on the appropriate examination schedule for your equipment.

Thorough examination may also be required at other times, including following installation where safety depends on the installation conditions, after exceptional circumstances that could affect equipment safety, or in other situations specified under LOLER.

If you are unsure when your equipment is due, contact a member of our team and we can review the information available and help establish the appropriate next step.
